Welcome to the first installment of our Beginners Car Care guides, where we break down simple auto maintenance jobs so you’re able to DIY install with our products and save yourself hundreds of dollars from a trip to your mechanic. Not everyone grew up with a grease monkey family member, there are no stupid questions here. Today we’ll be covering one of the easiest and important services you can do on your vehicle, the ‘dreaded’ oil change.

Changing the oil and filter in your vehicle is a simple and important maintenance task that can help extend the life of your engine and improve its performance. While it may seem daunting for those who have never done it before, it is actually a straightforward process that can be done with a few basic tools. This guide will provide step-by-step instructions to help you change your oil and filter, even if you have no prior experience. So, grab your tools and supplies and let's get started!

——Before you start, you will need the following items:

Oil Filter: This is a component that filters impurities from the engine oil. We strongly recommend using Ryco Filters. Make sure you grab the right one, the last thing you want is to find out you’ve ordered the wrong filter after draining your oil.

Oil Drain Pan: This is a container used to catch the used oil as it drains from the engine. Since you’ll be servicing your car regularly it’s worth  investing in a high quality one such as this Toledo 14L Oil Pan.

Oil Filter Wrench: This is a special tool used to remove the oil filter. View our range of premium oil filter tools here

Oil funnel: This is used to pour the new oil into the engine. Your standard funnel you’d find in the kitchen generally wouldn’t be sufficient for the hot oil and you wouldn’t be able to use it in the kitchen again after a service. We recommend the Ryco Flexi Funnel, which makes it much easier for oil changes especially in cars with awkward filter locations.

Engine Oil: Make sure to use the recommended type and weight of oil for your vehicle, we recommend sticking with Nulon oil. Simply enter your REGO into the Nulon Lube Guide to locate the most ideal oil for your vehicle and its usage. We strongly recommend sticking with a fully synthetic oil and going a bit thicker in viscosity if your car is high km.
